Review of last week's film ("Night Across the Street," 3 stars)
Steven says: This film was not made for the casual or mainstream movie-goer. Surrealist director Raul Ruiz pays homage to several classic films while trying to find his own place in the history of film-making. It's fun to watch but doesn't make much sense unless you have lots of film background (or like surrealist films).

Review of last week's film ("Half of a Yellow Sun", 3 stars)

Review of last week's film ("Take Out", 3.5 stars)
Steven says: "Take Out" presents the day in the life of a Chinese delivery man, complicated by the need to collect extra tips to pay off a debt. It is unassuming and, by the end, riveting in its normalcy. The story of the making of the film is almost as enticing as the film itself.

Review of last week's film ("When Father Was Away on Business", 3.5 stars)
Steven says: The Cannes winner in 1985, this film tackles the toll a war takes on one family that has its own dysfunctions. A working knowledge of 20th century Yugolav history would help with comprehension, but it's still an effective story.

Reveiw of the previous film (Sister, 3.5 stars)

Stevens say: Set in 1968, this is a lighthearted Israeli film is infused with a smidgen of mystery and built on the difficult memories of the Holocaust. Wasn't there more important things than love?", he asks.) from a matchmaker and a free-spirited girl visiting for the summer.

Review of last week's film ("Two Lives", 3.5 stars)

Review of last week's film ("The Forgiveness of Blood," 4 stars)
Steve says: Director Joshua Marston tried to be as meticulous as possible in understanding the unwritten laws of Albania, ones that force the males of a family to hide when one of them is targeted for revenge. To outsiders, it is almost baffling. The film's themes focus on contrasts, of young and old, tradition and modern times, law and unwritten law, and more. It is an intriguing film.

Review of last week's film ("The Missing Picture", 3.5 stars)
Steven says: How does a director make a film about his life without archival footage? Rithy Panh creates a world from memory, populating it with miniature (and often haunting) figurines, while telling of his oppressed life under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the mid-1970s. It's a mostly effective technique that pairs well with poetic observations of the director.

Review of last week's film ("The Broken Circle Breakdown", 4 stars)
Steven says: I'm a sucker for bluegrass music, especially the harmonies. So when one of the near-final scenes, where the main characters sing on stage and reflect so well what's going on in their troubled lives, shows up, I'm totally behind the film. It is well put together, shaped additionally by bluegrass songs, and overall an engaging experience. (Warning: it is not a happy film.)

Review of last week's film ("The Past", 4 stars)
Steven says: Asghar Farhadi has mastered films that tell realistic and deliberate stories. He understands that life is complicated, and none of his characters in "The Past" is spared chaos or mistrust. Review of last week's film ("A Touch of Sin", 3.5 stars)

Review of last week's film ("The Great Beauty", 4 stars)
Steven says: Reminiscent of Fellini's ("8 1/2"), this love letter to Rome juxtaposes the city's rich cultural history with the vapid nature of Italy's high society. From poverty to opulence, and from love to friendship, it touches on many life experiences through the eyes of an aging socialite. It leaves the viewer with many ideas to ponder.

Review of last week's (May 7) film (What Maisie Knew, 3.5 stars)
Steven says: Turmoil seems so normal to Maisie, it almost doesn't faze her. Until she finds out what life could be like without it. It's amazing that a 100-year-old story can translate almost effortlessly to the present -- and not a little scary.

Review of last week's film ("Computer Chess", three stars)
Steven says: Film Comment says this about the film: "a series of touchingly rhapsodic variations on communion and aloneness, desire and repression, control and chaos." That may be true. It is also one strange film that leaves the viewer questioning seemingly random scenes and wondering if the filmmaker was trying to make a deeper, philosophical film. It's a good exploration of what's important to people, and it definitely will lead to interesting discussions.

Review of last week's film ("Applause", three stars)
Steven says: Paprika Steen does a nice job of handling the character of Thea, from onstage "Martha" to rock-bottom alcoholic to manipulative ex-wife. Recovery is never easy, and family estrangement can only make it harder.I wanted Thea to redeem herself, but by the end I realized it may not be possible.

Review of last week's film (Blancanieves, 5 stars)
Steven says: Blancanieves is unexpected and enchanting. This beautifully rendered black and white film makes you listen to the music, see the entire screen and feel the impact of great cinematography. Who needs dialogue when the visuals tell the story so well? A creative treat.

Review of last week's film (Broken, 4 stars)
Steve says: Don't let the trailer fool you. This seemingly innocent film quickly sucks you in and then puts your emotions through the wringer. Artfully pieced together, "Broken" explores three very different families and how they deal (or not) with adversities. You'll root for Eloise Laurence as Skunk from start to finish.

Review of last week's film (Hannah Arendt, 4 stars)
Steve says: Don't watch this by yourself. Watch it with a group of friends and then discuss the philosophy of the "banality of evil" afterward. The movie is a good history lesson, a good philosophy lesson, and a reminder of our constant need for vigilance. Favorite line: "To try to understand is not the same thing as forgiveness."

Review of the Feb. 12 film (Moscow, Belgium -- stars)
Steven says: Life is messy, and "normal" is something everyone wants but rarely gets. No one knows that more than Matty, the main character of Moscow, Belgium (instead of the Belgian title -- Collision in Belgium -- which is way better). She's been living her life according to a 20-year-old dream and ends up unhappy because of it. The characters and situations are real and complicated, which make for a strong plot and a more convincing story.

Purdue officials announced that all university operations and classes for the remainder of Wednesday (Feb. 5) have been suspended and non-essential personnel are not required to report for campus duty.

Following suit, we are canceling tonight's screening of "Museum Hours" for Cinematheque for All. We will likely screen it during the Summer 2014 season so that we can remain on schedule for the remainder of the Spring 2014 season.

Stay safe and warm everyone.

Review of last week's film (The Makioka Sisters, 3 stars)
Steven says: Comparisons to Jane Austen stories or Downton Abbey are not far off for this 1983 Japanese melodrama. Appearances are everything to this family, though the changing cultural (and war) landscape in 1938 helps them see things from a different perspective.

Review of last week's film ("The Hunt" 4 stars)
Steven says: From the mouths of babes come cuteness and, in this film, debilitating accusations. It's hard to fathom how quickly someone's existence can implode when faced with damning testimony, no matter how erroneous. And it's even worse to know that life can never really go back to normal. The tribal nature of humans can be comforting in times of need; it can also be be scary when it clicks into protection mode.

On with the show (Jan. 22, 2014)

Tuesday was a sad day at Purdue. Different people and groups will respond to the campus shooting in different ways.

Despite the cancellation of Wednesday classes, Karrie and I have decided to move forward with our regularly scheduled screening Wednesday evening. It is one small way we feel we can foster community and feel like there is some normalcy in the world.

We understand if you choose to stay away from campus. If you do, "The Hunt" is available from Netflix for both DVD and online streaming customers.

If you choose to join us in Forney B124, we'll welcome you warmly and share our love of film with you starting at 7:10 p.m.

Review of last week's film (Frances Ha, 3.5 stars)
Steven says: When is it time to grow up? How does growing up affect really close friendships? Frances Ha answers these questions for its title character, providing a plethora of entertaining scenes, touching observations, and fairly real glimpses into the lives of today's 20-somethings. The black-and-white presentation enhances the film's artsy-yet-approachable feel.

Review of last week's film ("Kon-Tiki", 3.5 stars)
Steven says: With faith, science, and sheer will, the Kon-Tiki team floated 5,000 miles to prove it was possible for Peruvians to settle Polynesia. The story set-up is fast and so is the viewer's heart rate after several close calls. The film serves as a great reminder of the historic voyage and should help others investigate the full story for the first time. The film maker tried to pack so much into the film that there are some lose ends, suggesting small story lines could have been deleted without hurting the film.
